I’ve been working with Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) since 2008. I initially started my career as a qualified Youth Worker and have subsequently held various roles within the field of SEND ever since. This includes positions such as an EHCP/SEND case officer and SEND Senior Practitioner/Team Leader within three different Local Authorities (LA).

 

As an individual who has a disability and suffer from both severe long-standing bilateral senso-neural hearing impairment and dyslexia. I required a Statement of Special Educational Needs (Now formally known as an Education, Health and Care Plan – EHCP) throughout my entire schooling, to reduce and overcome my everyday barriers and ensure I was successful in life.

 

I found throughout my own experience navigating the world of SEND and the legal framework it sits within, often very complex and challenging with lots of ups and downs. Therefore, understand first hand, the importance of ensuring all children and young people have access to the appropriate information, advice and support. So, they can feel empowered and able to receive and navigate the correct support and services they require, so they are able to achieve the best outcomes for their lives without limitations.

 

I am currently the manager for Hartlepool’s Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS). In addition to the vast amount of knowledge and experience I have gained over the years. I also have the following qualifications which includes; A Bachelor of Arts Second Class Honours Degree in Community and Youth Studies, A level 4 NVQ Diploma in Advice and Guidance and have completed the IPSEA legal certification training levels 1-3.
